Ego

When somebody thinks they are better than most people in some aspect, they are generally looked down upon or as having a inflated ego, or as self-deluded. I consider myself pretty wise/intelligent for my age. I'm not a genius and i'm no sage but I think i'm definitely above average in both categories. I think the reason people tend to be disapproving or angry at people who think they're above most others in an area is for a few reasons.

1. the person who has a high opinion of themselves treats others as if they are below them which causes anger. 

2. the other person knows they are below them and gets angry because if it.

it can also be a combination of the two. i seriously treat others as if they are below me. yet, people still tend to think that i think i am better than them as a person simply because i am above their level in one area. i am trying to become more and more humble. my wisdom and intelligence are not in all areas, they are actually pretty narrow areas. we are all above another in some area, so lets treat each other as equals. one should not be angry toward another just because they are better than them in an area, because chances are, they are better than each other in different areas. everybody has their niche. dont be mad because another knows their niche.

one last thing. some people do really have an unjustified ego and are self deluded. its important to recognize that some live i delusion and some live in reality when it comes to ego or self-opinion in an area or overall.
