damaging optimism

note: please pardon my lacking articulation today. my thinking is shitty today.

i always find people who express optimism funny.

ive heard the phrase "things could be worse" and i wonder why they say that. its a truism. things could always be 'worse'. the way its said implies that you should appreciate the current situation more or at least be more accepting of it because things could be worse. this coping mechanism is damaging in my opinion. if we are more accepting of shitty circumstances because things could be worse then it lessens the motivation to make things better over time. to be more accepting of anything implies the lack of desire for better things and therefore lack of motivation to make them better. even in a situation where one has no power to make things better, to be accepting could cause one to lack motivation for improvement later on when one could change things.
